Café Stonewall

Café Stonewall was founded with a mission in 1987

In 1987, the articles of association were formalized with a notary, officially establishing the Stichting Huisvesting Homobeweging Twente (Foundation for Housing the Gay Movement Twente).

Gay Café Stonewall opened its doors in the Walstraat in 1989, about two years after the foundation was created. Since then, the café has been run entirely by volunteers, all working together to pursue the foundation’s mission.

The café is an integral part of that mission. The activities and events we organize are a direct extension of it — all carried out with joy, compassion, and a strong sense of community.

There’s still work to be done, and we remain committed to our cause. Together with our guests and partners, we’re proud of how far we’ve come — and Café Stonewall continues to be the place to be proud.

Our Mission

Organization

Our organization consists of a Daily Board and a Supervisory Board. The bar services are provided by volunteer bartenders. Café Stonewall is operated by the board of S.H.H.T. (Foundation for Housing the Gay Movement Twente). All proceeds are used to keep the café running and to maintain the venue.

Mission of S.H.H.T.

The foundation’s mission is to operate and provide a space for individuals and/or organizations that support the emancipation of gay and bisexual people in our society (as stated in our statutes). Today, we proudly host a wide range of LGBTQ+ organizations.

Volunteers

What makes the foundation truly special is that it is run entirely by volunteers — from the Daily Board and Supervisory Board to the volunteer bartenders. These are passionate individuals who wholeheartedly support the foundation’s mission.

SBBI-status

Café Stonewall is part of S.H.H.T. and holds official SBBI status (Social Interest Serving Institution).
